How to get what you want through goal setting - The Law of Attraction
What do you want your life to look like in 5 years time? Are you making steps towards that happening or are you just hoping somehow it will happen on its own?
Knowing where you are headed is one of the most important things you can do to ensure you get what you want. The second most important thing you can do is do something about it. Getting your thoughts out of your head and into the form of a goal the first step to achieving something magnificent with your life.
So, the question is, what do you want? When do you want it? How determined are you to get it? This post outlines how to write a goal and how to stick to it. This is the basis of “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne and how to truly utilise the law of attraction.
What is a goal?
A SMART goal is a block of text written in a series of paragraphs which describes where you want to be by when in precise detail as if you already have it.
If you search on Google for “smart goals” you will get various definitions of what each of the letters of SMART stand for. So as a mnemonic it misses things out, however, this type of goal setting can still be considered the SMART format as it includes all the definitions in one set of instructions.
Why set goals?
If you got in your car and set the satnav to destination A and started driving and after 10 minutes, stopped the car and reprogrammed the satnav to destination B in the opposite direction and then half an hour later programmed the satnav to destination C and drove for a little and then changed it back to A and then to C and D and E and B etc. then likelihood of you ever reaching the original destination you set out to reach is extremely slim.
In life this is exactly what tends to happen if we do not have a clear goal as to where we are going. Sometimes people have 2, 3 or more directions or ideas that they are pursuing at the same time. This may even be you! There are also some people who are adamant that they do not need to set goals and that’s perfectly OK, you don’t have to set goals however if you want to achieve something significant and you want it by a certain time then writing a goal is absolutely the right thing to do.
How to really get what you want

Your goal should motivate you
If when you read your goal you are not completely overwhelmed with happiness and motivation then the goal is not right for you. It needs to be so compelling that when you read it you are motivated into wanting to take action. An excellent goal may even give you goose bumps the first few times you read it. If this happens then it is a sign that you are truly driven by it which is exactly what a well written goal should do.
It should be very specific
It’s very important that you write your goal as specifically as you can. Your unconscious mind will notice the most efficient route to exactly what it is that you want.
If you said that you wanted to be successful without specifying an outcome, your definitions of success may get changed to make the goal easier to reach. Without being specific your unconscious mind will find shortcuts to something matching your goal which might not have been what you originally had in mind. For example someone once wrote that they wanted to be surrounded by money and within six months they found themselves working in an armoured cash transport car. Think carefully about what you ask for.
You must read it every morning and every night
If you stop reading your goal, you stop giving yourself direction. Change something in your room or set an extra alarm on your phone to remind you to read your goal morning and night.
Remember you always get what you focus on so focus on what you want (rather than what you do not want). This is also the basis for positive thinking.
